From the first meal with our new daughter in Nanchang, she insisted on having watermelon. Aside from the occasional banana, our little ten-month old Ningdu princess reached out in purposeful fashion during every meal as we walked through the standard buffet line. Of all things; watermelon?
It wasn't until I met a friend in Austin, Texas last year, who's daughter was at the Ningdu orphanage the same time as ours, that he asked, "Does your daughter like to eat watermelon?" I nodded and asked, "yes, how about yours?" Interestingly, this lawyer-father travels to China quite frequently and has visited Ningdu. He said that watermelon juice is provided the children and that's why he assumes his daughter - and, mine - love watermelon. Now, nearly 3 years after returning from China, we smile as our daughter sips on watermelon juice fresh from the blender. It sure beats junk food!
